Today, is the day to BE "Awesome" in Sewing!

Don't forget to bring EVERYTHING you will need!

Friday, May 11, 2012

Our May 4H meeting was quite the whirlwind- I definitely have 2 new favorite recipes- Loved the Applesauce Pancakes, and the wonderful brownies! Thanks to Zach and Courtney for their "show and teach", their recipes are at the bottom of this post. We also need to thank Macey's for accommodating us during our meetings.

Remember that in June we will be having our sewing meetings.
June 12, 13, 14 (1:00-4:00) at the USU Extension. I still need some parent helpers.
If you have not helped yet I would like to know what day(s)
you will be at our sewing days to help out!
UNFORTUNATELY We didn't get to talk over our projects and I apologize if you brought your patterns and weren't able to show them to me. I will be in contact with each of the parents to make arrangements for sewing machines and making a list of what they will need for their projects. I am really excited for all the new sewing activities that you are planning. I love seeing the enthusiasm of the kids for their projects. REMEMBER!!!! to Prewash your fabrics! This helps your fabric fibers to tighten up so that when you finish your projects they will fit after they are washed.

Remember to bring your Tie-Dye shirts to our Sewing Days-
Here are the finishing directions for the tie-dye shirts:

Finishing Your Tie-Dye Shirt:
1. Allow the T-shirt to set in the plastic bag overnight. Put on the rubber gloves and rinse the shirt, starting with warm water and then cool, until the water runs clear. Remove the rubber bands during rinsing. This is permanent dye, so be careful not to get any of it on your clothes.

2. Wash the shirt by itself in the washing machine with cold water to avoid shrinkage. It's a good idea to run the washer again with warm water and some soap to make sure that no dye is left in your machine.

3. Hang up the shirt to dry or dry it in the dryer on the coolest setting.

4. After you wear the shirt, wash and dry it separately once more in case the dye is not completely rinsed out.

May 10th will be our Last Activity held at Macey's

During this activity we will have 2 demonstrations, Zach and Courtney.

We will also start our Tie-Dyeing for the Club T-shirt. Please DO NOT WEAR NICE CLOTHES to this activity. Also, there will be instructions for taking home the shirts and finishing the shirts. We will be adding a design to the back and front of the shirts, but the tie-dye will be set before we add the decals.

Our 4H Awesomes Sewing Camp (June 12, 13, 14) 1:00-4:00. We will be holding it at the USU extension (at the Health Department). During this meeting we will be ironing on the decals. ALSO There will be some prep work that needs to be done BEFORE camp. The most important item is for me to know: What Sewing Machine will you be using? However, I will list everything you will need here and there will be a check off list that will go home! There are a few of you brave folks who are going to try some harder projects. It will take you longer, so we are going to start earlier! I would like to meet with you prior to our camp so that you can  finish the project you start.

If you are new to sewing- I would like to suggest attending the Sewing Camp that the extension is putting on May 29th and May 30th. They will be sewing a pillowcase and some other simple items. The Cost will be $5.00 for both days, and you will need to bring fabric for the pillow case. I will be helping with this activity, They would prefer for you to have an adult there to help you (because I am helping put on the camp I cannot be your adult that accompanies you, but you might consider a parent, grandparent, teenage brother/sister, neighbor) They do not have to be a great sewer, they only need to be able to help you understand instructions and use the sewing machine. Contact me for more information.

Thank you for everyone's help at our April Meeting! Thanks to the Hintze's and Mogle's.

Here are the recipes:
(remember you can earn a prize for testing these recipes in your own Kitchen!)

Peanut Butter Fingers  (Ryan)
1/2 c. margarine
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. peanut butter
1/2 c. white sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
1 c. oatmeal
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. chocolate chips (optional)

Combine margarine, brown sugar, white sugar, peanut butter, egg, and vanilla.  Mix well.  Add flour, oatmeal, baking soda, and salt.  Mix well.  Fold in chocolate chips, if using.  Press out into 9 X 13 pan and bake at 350 for 17 minutes.  Cut into squares when cool.

We also like to make these without the chocolate chips, but frosted with chocolate frosting instead.  (Make sure to cool completely before frosting.)
Chocolate Muffins  (Shannon)
 2 2/3 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. baking cocoa
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3 eggs
1 c. sour cream
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. vegetable oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chocolate chips

In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.   In another bowl, beat the eggs, sour cream, water, milk, oil, and vanilla.  Stir into dry ingredients, just until moistened.  Fold in chocolate chips.  Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups two-thirds full.  Bake at 325 degrees for 20 - 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.  Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to finish cooling.  Makes about 24 - 30 muffins.

 Brigadeiro (Brazilian fudge balls) (Kiara)
1 Can Condensed Milk
2 Tablespoons Butter
1/2 cup Cocoa Powder (like nesquick) (or 1/4 cup nesquick and 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder)

Cook all together on medium heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring constantly until is thick enough that you start seeing bottom of the pan.

Pour into a glass dish and let it sit for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Roll into small balls then roll in Chocolate Sprinkles.

A few Reminders of what is coming up in 4H.

This coming Saturday (March 24th) is the County Super Saturday. Registration is whatever class fees + 2.50. Lunch is included.

Our next Club meeting will be April 12th. We will be having 3 demos by: Kiara, Ryan, and Shannon.

Last time we talked about taking measurements. I have asked them to take their measurements with a partner at home. If they will do this, I have a prize at our next meeting for them.
If they need some one on one help- Please contact me and we will find a time that I can help them.

They need to start deciding what projects they will be completing for our Summer Sewing camp. I would like them to choose a project that uses woven fabric like cotton, cotton-blend- (a broadcloth or flannel fabric.) Stay away from the knit fabric patterns, and fleece projects.

If your child has been in our 4H group for a while now- challenge them to find a pattern that is different than what they have already done. Perhaps a button down shirt or a matching set of skirt/shirt.

If your child is new to 4H Keep it Simple- PJ pants, shorts, elastic waist band skirts, or an apron. I have a few patterns they could use for these types of projects if you would like to use them. (I will need to know this in advance though)

With a Jo-Anns in town now- you might consider getting on their mailing list so you can find out when they have sales on patterns and fabric. When looking for patterns- look for the EASY or LEARN to SEW patterns- they tend to be more basic patterns.

Thanks for your Support of the 4H Awesomes!

March Meeting's Challenges

When we meet in April there will be prizes for those who:
!!!try out the recipes from our March Activity (a prize for each recipe)!!!

>>>Also a prize if you have worked with someone to get your measurements and have written them down on the cards you were given. Look at the diagrams on the cards to make those measurements. If you have troubles with this, call and ask for help or bring your questions to our next meeting and I will answer each of them.

It is time to consider what kind of project you will be making this summer. To do this you will need to know what size you are going to be sewing.

See the Post for the recipes!
A Special Thank You to Sarah A and Bonnie for their Fabulous "Show and Teach" Lessons.

Sarah's Amazing Avocado Dip

3 Avocado's (look for the dark color)
3 Roma Tomatoes (Diced)
1 Tbls. Lime Juice
1 tsp. salt

Cut Avocado in half and then in fouths. Remove Pit and peal skin off. Cut up in cubes and put in a bowl. Mash up Avocado. Add diced tomatoes. (Remember when cutting up the tomatoes to use a saw motion on the tomatoes- to keep their shape) (you can also substitute a can of diced tomatoes). Add lime juice and salt. Stir together, using a folding motion so that you do not crush tomatoes.

Great Job Sarah, I really enjoyed the way you demonstrated how to peal and cut the tomatoes and Avocados.

Bonnie's Fabulous Nachos

Layer shredded Cheese on a plate
Layer tortilla chips on top of cheese
(continue to add layers till the plate cannot handle any more)

Put plate into the microwave. Check every 30 seconds to see how it melting. When  it has melted enough. Dig In and Enjoy!

What a fantastic Recipe Bonnie! I loved your story about making them for your dad that he gave you a nickname for it! I know that everyone was so excited to go home and make some for themselves.
